A method based on DNA has a further advantage over those based on other biological molecules. By using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a few DNA molecules can be copied many times (amplified) following the scheme shown in the slide.
For this, it is necessary and key to design two short DNA pieces (called primers) specific for the two extremes of the DNA sequence to be copied.
