Culture
At the UIB students not only learn in class. Aware that culture generates progress and knowledge, years ago we created the Cultural Activities Service (SAC), an authentic promoter of the cultural life of the university community.
Its mission is to offer artistic and creative incentives of all kinds to the university community and to society in general. Not only as the best disseminator, but also by getting involved in the production of training and cultural projects of the University itself, as well as in those that facilitate the recognition of minority cultural aspects.
Its scope goes beyond the campus, as the SAC becomes the link between the cultural scene in the Balearic Islands and the university community. In addition to its annual programmes, it collaborates with the main institutions and organizations of the archipelago.
Cinema
Our star project is Cinema d'Autor, a season that every year brings a selection of Spanish auteur films, whose directors are responsible for revealing all the secrets of the production to the public in a subsequent colloquium. Vicente Aranda, Jesús Garay, Sílvia Munt, Jaume Balagueró and José Luis Guerin have participated in previous editions.
In addition, the Film UIB programme shows a film weekly at the UIB campus. Each season allows us to analyze a current topic and enjoy a colloquium with an expert in the field.
Drama and opera
The SAC has an annual programme that brings together the main companies in the Balearic Islands in disciplines such as clown, traditional drama and storytelling. A series of plays reaches not only the assembly hall but also less conventional venues such as the underground station.
In collaboration with the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Òpera Oberta season seeks to introduce students to this art by broadcasting four operas each year. All of them with introductory lectures that review their historical and artistic context.
Music
The UIB campus becomes a venue for numerous concerts and festivals every year. Furthermore, in 1976 our University founded the University of the Balearic Islands Choir, with Joan Company as its founding director. Since then it has become an important exponent of music in the archipelago. The choir has already performed in New York, Hungary, Sweden, Poland and Greece.
Literature
Every year the UIB organises the Jornadas de Cultura Portuguesa and collaborates with the Festival de Poesia de la Mediterrània. It also participates in different seminars and courses on classical culture, philosophy and literature.
Discounts
With the aim of bringing the cultural scene closer to students, the UIB has a series of agreements with different venues in the Balearic Islands, such as CineCiutat, Teatre del Mar or Trui Teatre, which offer 10 - 50% discounts to students on tickets.
